Charter Board Institute

The New Jersey Charter Schools Association offers an annual, day-long Charter Board Institute for charter school trustees, prospective trustees, and school leaders. The third annual institute is tentatively scheduled for late spring 2017. The 2016 NJCSA Board Institute was held May 26, 2016, at the NJCSA Annual Charter Schools Conference.

The Institute is presented by NJCSA staff, alongside invited guest presenters who are experts in charter school governance, leadership development, policy development, and regulatory compliance. It focuses on both big-picture issues of achieving excellence for students, as well as best practices related to use of data, fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities, and creating a positive culture of accountability.

The tentative agenda for the day:

  • Introductions
  • Why we serve? Why charter schools?
  • Mission, Vision, and Values
  • From Good to Great: What does it mean to pursue excellence in a public school?
  • Key Roles and Responsibilities for Trustees
  • Understanding the Money: Financial Literacy for Charter School Trustees
  • Using Data to Make Good Decisions
  • Accountability in Action: Best Practices in Lead Person Evaluation
  • Resources and Tools for Trustees
