Parent Story: How North Star Academy Helped Both My Daughter and I Achieve Our Academic Goals

By: Ivette Castillo, a parent of a North Star Academy student

When I moved to New Jersey to pursue my degree at Rutgers, I needed to find the right school for my daughter. I was not familiar with Newark and did not have any friends or family nearby so I was honestly not sure what to expect. I was first introduced to North Star Academy, a public charter school in Newark, through a community service project. At this event, I got to see first-hand how much the North Star staff care for Newark families and our children. I had no doubts this is where I wanted my children to attend school.

My daughter has grown since she began attending North Star. She is excited to read big words.  And as her mom, I am overjoyed to see how she is excelling in reading and in math and enjoying her after-school program. Her teachers are caring and connected.  They engage with me as a partner, whenever she has hit a new milestone so we are always on the same page about her targets.  Our challenge is to keep all of her academic activities both at home and at school to the same high level of expectations that North Star has set for her.

Knowing that my child is in a safe and healthy environment has given me the freedom and comfort to focus on my own studies.  Together, we are learning and growing and I am so grateful that we found North Star Academy.
